Statement by Bishop Michael Burbidge on National Migration Week
(Sept. 19-25, 2022)

The Diocese of Arlington joins with Catholics throughout the United States in recognizing National Migration Week, culminating in the international World Day of Migrants and Refugees on Sunday, September 25. The theme Pope Francis chose for both observances is “Building a Future with Migrants and Refugees.”

As we reflect on the difficult, often heart-breaking circumstances confronting so many migrants-including refugees, immigrants, and victims and survivors of human trafficking-may we continue to welcome them to our diocese and include them among our prayers. For as Pope Francis says, “the inclusion of those most vulnerable is the necessary condition for full citizenship in God's Kingdom.” Throughout the history of Catholic Charities in our diocese, we have worked to resettle refugees and give them an opportunity to sustain themselves in a new land. Let us prayerfully and earnestly seek to serve these new neighbors so we may grow closer to our Lord, Jesus Christ.
