Help Support Newcomers

Catholic Charities is welcoming newly arrived Afghan families. We have received an overwhelming response from those who want to help. Refugees most urgent need is for permanent housing. Scroll below to how you can assist with this or other needs. Newcomer Services also needs volunteer English teachers, citizenship and workforce training teachers, mentors, office assistants, pro bono attorneys, legal office assistants, and interpreters. There are several ways parishes, parishioners and members of the community can help us assist newcomers who continue to arrive.

  1. Pray. 

  2. Check out our Amazon Wishlist for our current urgent needs for new arrivals HERE.

  3. Provide permanent housing.

  4. Provide pro-bono professional counseling, health or legal services. Email: MRSDonations@ccda.net.

    Volunteer with Education and Workforce Development

    Volunteers play a critical role at Education and Workforce Development (EWD). We have more than 800 active volunteers across our program, and we could not serve thousands of students each year were it not for the generosity and dedication of our volunteers.

    Report Your Volunteer Hours

    Please enter your hours on a weekly basis. You may include training and travel time in addition to actual volunteer time. All of Hogar’s grants require us to collect information on how many hours are donated by volunteers, so please enter your hours in a timely manner to help us in our grant reporting, fundraising efforts and other fiscal matters. Thank you!

    How to report volunteer hours:

    1. Click “Login/Register” in the top right-hand corner

      • Username and password are the ones you set up when you created an account to fill out the volunteer application. 

      • We recommend using your email address as your username; if you've forgotten your username, try that first

      • Staff cannot retrieve your password for your- please use the "Forgot your password?" tool​

    2. Click “Report my Service” in the Volunteer Main Menu

    3. Enter your hours

      If you perform more than one volunteer placement with Hogar, you will need to choose the corresponding placement from the “Select a Survey” drop down list.

      The only required field in “Hours”.  Please enter a date as well.  Don’t forget to click “Ok” when you’re done.

    For Employers:

    If you are an employer, we can design language training for your employees relevant to your workplace. Your customized curriculum could include:

    · Contextualized English instruction (i.e. customer service, hospitality)

    · Industry-specific vocabulary and concepts (i.e. construction, retail)

    · Employer-specific vocabulary and concepts based on your business and expectations

    · Relevant workplace training (i.e. soft skills)

    · Additional industry-specific training and certifications
