Resettling Refugees Since 1975

Migration and Refugee Services

Migration and Refugee Services is one of 104 national affiliates of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Since its founding in 1975, MRS has resettled and assisted more than 29,000 refugees and asylees in the Northern Virginia community. All refugees who enter our program have undergone extensive background checks by the U.S. State Department. In addition, 89% of those we currently serve came to the United States after assisting the U.S. military abroad.

Our Services

We presently offer services in five sites throughout the Diocese of Arlington, including Arlington, Alexandria, Manassas, Annandale, and the city of Fredericksburg. At each of the sites, a comprehensive array of resettlement services are offered so that newcomers can become self-sufficient as soon as possible after arrival. Staff members offer case management services in culturally appropriate languages - presently we have 18 different languages on staff. These services are made possible by grants from the Virginia Office of Newcomer Services, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, and through the financial support of churches, parishes, community foundations and groups, and individual donors.

Migrants and refugees are not pawns on the chessboard of humanity. They are children, women, and men who leave or are forced to leave their homes for various reasons, who share a legitimate desire for knowing and having, but above all for being more.
