- Receptionist
- Answer phones and direct calls to appropriate offices
- Refer callers to proper resources if they are ineligible for assistance here
- Evaluate callers for possible food and clothing assistance
- Inform callers of volunteer opportunities at Christ House
- Maintain call log
- Check Christ House voicemail and forward on messages
- Volunteers to work as job mentors to help homeless men find employment. The mentor helps with resumes, applications, interview preparation, training, and the job search.
- Volunteers to assist with managing the thrift shop, Tuesday
through Saturday, 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Various other duties are available
for qualified men and women and older youth. For example:
- Sorter – assess incoming donated goods and determine appropriate placement of items in the shop
- Organizer – assist manager with arranging sale items throughout the shop (shelving, hanging, and displaying)
- Sales associate – serve as retail floor assistant in selling and processing distribution or purchasing of thrift store stock
- Handyman – work with the manager to do “touch-up”
as needed, small repairs, shelving installations, display
set-ups, painting, clean-up, etc.
- Arts & Crafts Instructor: St. Martin de Porres Senior Center is seeking an arts-and-crafts instructor to lead craft activities a few weekdays a month for seniors
- Chinese Translator: Are you bilingual in English and Chinese? St. Martin de Porres Senior Center is seeking a translator for our monthly calendar. This can be done by correspondence if you prefer, or you can come to the center and also do some live translation. This important volunteer helps us serve our recent immigrant seniors.
- ESL Instructor: Teach English to immigrant seniors and help them more fully integrate into our society. Second language not required. Free training provided.
- Volunteer Drivers September 13, 14, 15, and 16. Deliver emergency supplies to seniors in the Alexandria area.
- Yard Sale Workers September 25: St. Martin de Porres Senior Center needs help with their stand at the Taney Ave. Mile-Long Yard Sale. Help us sell items to raise funds for the Senior Activities Program.
- Volunteers to accept, pick-up, re-register, and transfer ownership of donated cars for Catholic Charities’ car ministry. This program accepts used cars in good working condition and provides them to needy individuals. Many individuals and families have seen their lives take a turn for the better when Catholic Charities provided them with a car that allowed them to get to a job on time, get a child to the doctor, or buy and transport groceries. Almost a thousand cars have been given to people in need. Please help keep the car ministry going. Interested volunteers may call 703-841-2531 or e-mail to hburke@ccda.net.
- Volunteers to research grant opportunities and identify organizations or foundations that offer grant monies to nonprofit social service agencies, so that Catholic Charities can consider preparing and submitting grant applications.
- Office helpers – answer phones, light typing, etc.
- Special events assistants: Catholic Charities has special
events throughout the year and relies on volunteers to assist
with their successful implementation.
- A clerical volunteer to help a half-day per week
- A certified Red Cross CPR instructor to teach infant-and-child
CPR, on a volunteer or low-cost basis.
ESL site coordinator volunteer: (a) At beginning of Semester, develop a plan to market and report on the ESL program within each site, i.e., events at a church, newsletter at a community center and so forth; build an ongoing relationship with site pastor or manager and meet periodically to report on success of the program; invite teachers to site orientation and student registration day; administer student registration; deliver student payments and registration forms to Hogar Immigrant Services program coordinator; communicate program procedures and schedules to teachers; deliver relevant materials to volunteers and students; and assist teachers in administering tests and surveys. (b) Throughout the year, open and close site classrooms/buildings; engage in supporting and encouraging teachers and students during class days; report any teacher/student needs or requests to program coordinator; administer a process for taking student attendance to volunteers; inform teachers of schedule changes, new information and in-service opportunities; train and manage new/substitute teachers; and substitute for teachers when necessary. Citizenship Teachers: Teach Citizenship classes to adult immigrants to prepare them for the USCIS Citizenship Exam. Training is provided and a second language is not required. Volunteers teach one class a week in Falls Church or Sterling. Call Daniel Quinn at ext. 237 or e-mail to dquinn@ccda.net
Naturalization Office Volunteer (Falls Church office)
The Hogar legal services department needs a volunteer to make phonecalls and return messages to clients who need more information about our citizenship workshop. In addition to communicating with potential clients, this volunteer would be asked to assist with workshop publicity and outreach strategy. Bilingual Spanish speaker needed. Hours are very flexible – approximately 4 hours per week during the daytime (Mon-Fri 9am to 5pm). Contact Richard Eldridge at reldridge@ccda.net.
Naturalization Workshop Volunteer: Volunteers are needed at monthly Saturday workshops to help clients fill out applications for U.S. citizenship. No previous experience or foreign language skills necessary. Training is provided the morning of the workshop. Contact Contact Richard Eldridge at reldridge@ccda.net.
Legal Aide: Volunteers assist the immigration legal services department with client casework. This work includes preparing immigration-related applications, meeting with clients, and researching and drafting legal memoranda. One to two days per week; hours to be arranged. - Men and women volunteers who will start mentoring inmates in both English & Spanish in Fairfax Adult Detention Center, Arlington Jail, Loudoun Adult Detention Center, Leesburg, and Prince William Adult Detention Center in Manassas before they are released and then continue mentoring them when they go home to the communities.
- Men and women volunteers who know how to facilitate Bible Study in English & Spanish for the following facilities: Fairfax Adult Detention Center, Arlington Jail, Loudoun Adult Detention Center (Leesburg), and Prince William Adult Detention Center (Manassas).
- Men and Women volunteers who could mentor inmates inside the prisons and jails in English and Spanish for the following facilities: Fairfax Adult Detention Center, Arlington Jail, Loudoun Adult Detention Center, and Prince William Adult Detention Center.
- Men who could teach Pre-GED & ESL to male prisoners and facilitate prayer & Scripture reflection in the following facilities: White Post Detention Center (White Post, VA) and White Post Diversion Center (White Post, VA).
- Young men and women who could visit and work with juvenile inmates at the following facilities: Rappahannock Juvenile Detention Center (Stafford, VA) and NOVA Juvenile Detention Center (Alexandria, VA).

Volunteer Service Projects
- Feed a Family Project: Have your group assemble healthy, hearty, non-perishable meals and Catholic Charities will distribute them to those in need around the diocese.
- We Care Card Event: Blessed Teresa of Calcutta said, “Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.” Give the gift of hope by creating encouraging cards that Catholic Charities will distribute to the homeless, lonely, elderly, sick and imprisoned in our diocese.
