CATHOLIC CHARITIES SHOEBOX EVENT: 1,269 BOXES STUFFED WITH LITTLE NECESSITIES AND SMALL JOYS FOR THE POOR

Arlington, Virginia, April 16, 2012 -- Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington kicked off the first “Volunteer Shoebox Event” April 14. One hundred volunteers stuffed 1,269 boxes with necessary and not-so-necessary items to be distributed to those in need around the diocese.

Volunteers of all ages packed, decorated and personalized each box with toiletries, clothing, food, books, note cards, candies, religious items, inspirational items and toys.

Many of the items are necessities that cannot be purchased with food stamps or through other agencies.

“This is what makes us Christian,” said volunteer Margo Roy. “Whether young or old, we’re all here to help others. We’re putting ourselves; we’re putting love and personality into every box.”

Catholic Charities will distribute the boxes to clients and those in need through its various social services including: Christ House food pantry, Loaves and Fishes food pantry, Catholic Charities’ Western Regional Office, St. Martin de Porres Senior Center and more.

“This event allowed volunteers to truly consider the needs – physical, emotional and spiritual – of the people we serve,” said Sally O’Dwyer, Catholic Charities’ vice president of Community Services. “We were overwhelmed by the response and generosity of the donors and volunteers and look forward to the smiles these little packages will bring to our clients.”
